Looking at this lovely wagon I immediatly think of the Far West cowboy movies! :-)
I had asked for a (full size) Oregon trail wagon for Christmas when I was a kid. I was *very* disappointed. :-(
Gee, CQ, can't imagine why you didn't get a "full size" Oregon trail wagon. Heh. Heh. What would you have done with it, if you had? Yeah, I know - you would have headed west!
I think it's amazing that so many of these old covered wagons have survived. But did pioneers really travel to Florida in these? I always asscciate them with the settling of the West not Florida.
EG - I would imagine that at one time, everyone traveled using buckboards similar to this. The Villages is a Disneyland for people over 55...so they create settings and ambiance. Spanish Springs has a "western" or "Spanish" flavor so it should have a buckboard somewhere and thus it is created and put in the public square. It's more of an advertising gimmick than anything. All this faux reality can be disconcerting unless you just let it go, not worry about the fact that many things you see aren't real, and just enjoy. Then you can have fun in The Villages.
that looks very pittoresque and pretty
