We found this Primitive Baptist Church in Deland, Florida. We have no idea as to what "primitive" means, but were further puzzled by the fact it appeared there was no place for parishioners to park while attending services.
Keep us posted when you find out more about "primitive". Maybe it was the first? It's a cute church and perhaps the absence of a parking lot means that they are trying to get people to walk a little instead of driving...
Primitive as in Primitive Baptist means "Original". Primitive Baptists were the original baptists from the time of the Apostles until now. At the founding of the country until 1832 baptists were pretty much together and there was a split in that year. The Primitive Baptists not wishing to adulterate the New Testament worship practices with missionism, Sunday schools and instruments in the church. (This being just a brief synopsis.) So today the Primitive Baptists also known as Old Line or Old School Baptists continue to have the Bible as their sole rule of faith and practice and their services consist of acapella singing, preaching and prayer. Each church is congregational in nature, which means there is hierarchy greater than the church. The ordained minister is called an Elder as dictated by the New Testament. Now the Deland church you have posted here may be a "Progressive" Primitive Baptist Church (most Old Line churches do not have steeples) which means they have capitulated to the world and introduced pianos and Sunday Schools. You can find out more at www.palmbethel.org. I am the Pastor of Palm Bethel and am so glad to take this opportunity to explain what "Primitive" means in this instance. I would also imagine from the photo they park on the grass around the church. BTW, the closest Primitive Baptist Church to Deland, I think, is the Winter Garden Primitive Baptist Church. This was a "progressive" Primitive Baptist Church. The parking lot was located adjacent to a detached fellowship hall that fronts on the street seen to the right in the photo. Unfortunately, after some promising renovations both inside and out in the last couple years, the church apparently closed it's doors for the last time at some point around May of this year.
